CASE STUDY – DALNASPIDAL EARTHING WORKS
Client – Story Rail
Location – Dalnaspidal, Scottish Highlands, UK
Duration – 6 Weeks

SCOPE OF WORKS

Dalnaspidal is located very remotely within the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. This Highland Mainline provides a link to the far North of Scotland from the rest of central Scotland and the entire UK.

Our client Story Rail approached us with a unique problem and a suggested solution from our design partner SVM Consultants. The problem at site was stray voltages being witnessed at rail where sparks were being experienced by track operatives undertaking drainage and embankment works. After site testing and monitoring the issue was found to have come from induced voltages from the nearby national grid power lines.
The problem required a quick turnaround and an engineering team to look at all eventualities and provide a full package as a solution.
Once our solution was presented to the project team, the equipment was purchased, manufactured and ready for site dispatch within a few days.
A robust implementation strategy was developed and approved and the site works undertaken to allow the Story Rail drainage and embankment works to continue. On completion of the drainage and embankment works the risk of having to close this vital section of track providing a lifeline to the north of Scotland was removed.
