Improving Resilience at Network Rail's East Midlands Control Centre (EMCC)
Kent PHK is proud to have supported Network Rail in delivering a major resilience improvement programme at the East Midlands Control Centre (EMCC) in Derby.
What began as a UPS replacement project quickly evolved into a wider infrastructure resilience initiative after detailed investigations identified several single points of failure across the site's critical power distribution systems.
Working within a live operational railway environment, our team developed and delivered a phased programme of upgrades designed to improve reliability, maintainability, and future operational flexibility.
Project Highlights,
⚡ 2 x 320kVA UPS Systems
⚡ New bus-coupler arrangement to improve system redundancy
⚡ Automatic Transfer Switch solutions for signalling workstations
⚡ Critical PDU modifications to eliminate single points of failure
⚡ Extensive circuit tracing and infrastructure verification
⚡ Re-identification of legacy signalling power circuits
⚡ Recovery of redundant and undocumented infrastructure
⚡ Dual-supply enhancements to critical operational equipment
Why This Matters:
For a facility responsible for controlling large sections of the railway network, resilience is everything.
These works have helped reduce operational risk, improve fault-finding and maintenance capabilities, and create a more robust power architecture capable of supporting future upgrades and long-term operational reliability.
Delivering complex engineering works in a live railway environment requires careful planning, close collaboration, and a relentless focus on safety and operational continuity. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this project a success.
